Facebook has taken a step forward to fight against fake news by introducing a prompt on the top of your News Feed which says ‘Tips for Spotting False News’. By clicking this prompt message, you will be directed to an ‘educational guide’ that will teach you all the tips and tricks for spotting fake news. This is an initiative by the Social Media giant to stop the dissemination of false news on its platform.
According to Facebook’s recent blog post, users in 14 countries will begin to see a link on the top of their News Feed. This educational guide will offer 10 tips and access to all the related learning resources in the Facebook Help Centre. Facebook has started collaborating with various news and media literacy organisations across the globe to expand its initiative.
Adam Mosseri, Facebook’s VP of News Feed, stated in a blog post that "Improving news literacy is a global priority, and we need to do our part to help people understand how to make decisions about which sources to trust. False news runs counter to our mission to connect people with the stories they find meaningful. We will continue working on this, and we know we have more work to do.”
Facebook recently collaborated with other tech companies to come up with a News Integrity Initiative, which is aimed towards renewing faith in journalism and spread awareness about online news reading, publishing practices.
