BSNL, a state-run telecom operator, has marked its first official step in phone manufacturing as it introduced a satellite phone. The device is created for users who work or travel in places where mobile networks are not present. It comes with a big battery that could last days on a single charge. Unlike normal phones that depend on telecom towers, this device connects directly to satellites for voice communication. The primary consumers of the new device will be the emergency services, defence operations and remote industries where staying connected can be difficult. Here’s everything we know about BSNL’s new satellite phone.

BSNL satellite phone: Features

The new handset from BSNL is an Inmarsat satellite phone built for mission-critical communication. The main highlight of the device is its satellite connectivity, which allows the users to make voice calls even in remote regions where there is no trace of a mobile network. Moreover, the handset also includes an SOS emergency support feature that can be useful during emergencies.

BSNL confirmed that the satellite phone has a rugged design and is built to handle harsh working conditions. Considering the tough nature of the conditions the device will be used in, the manufacturers have made sure that the phone has good battery backup. Since it works by connecting directly with the satellites, you can also make calls even if there are no telecom networks.

The satellite phone will not be available in retail stores, as it’s aimed at specialised users instead of everyday consumers. According to BSNL, it is suitable for sectors such as defence, maritime operations, disaster response, mining, remote industrial sites and adventure travel. These users often operate in areas where traditional mobile connectivity is unavailable, making satellite communication an important requirement.
