WhatsApp may soon remind you of your contacts’ birthdays: Here is how
WhatsApp may add a dedicated section to display upcoming birthdays and send in-app reminders.
The feature will work only for contacts who have shared their date of birth with WhatsApp.
The birthday reminder feature is currently under development, with no official launch timeline announced.
After introducing a slew of new features, WhatsApp is now planning a new feature which can help users remember their contact’s birthdays without relying on third party calendar apps. The feature has been spotted on a recent Android beta update and is currently under development. According to details shared by beta trackers, the app is testing a dedicated section that will display upcoming birthdays and send in-app reminders when one of your contacts is celebrating their special day.
SurveyThe feature builds on an earlier change introduced by WhatsApp, where some users were asked to provide their date of birth for age verification and regulatory compliance. The company initially began collecting this information in regions where local laws need online platforms to verify users’ ages. Until now, the information had no visible consumer-facing purpose.
If the birthday reminder feature rollout, WhatsApp will use the data to generate notifications for users. However, reminders will only work for contacts who have already shared their birth date with WhatsApp.Users who have never entered their birthday into the app will not appear in the reminders section.
At present, the feature is still in development and is not available for beta testers. WhatsApp has also not introduced any privacy settings that would allow users to control whether their birthday is shared with contacts. Since development is ongoing, the company can add privacy controls before the feature reaches a stable release.
It must be noted that the company has not confirmed the development and official timeline for feature rollout. It is very possible that the feature may undergo changes before becoming available for all users.
