Domino’s Australia has unveiled a pizza delivery robot, which the company claims to be the world’s first autonomous pizza delivery vehicle. The pizza chain partnered with Australian Startup, Marathon Robotics and uses a robot sourced from the military. The robot, called the Domino’s Robotic Unit or DRU, has a sensory system that uses lasers to move around obstacles in its path as it makes its way to a customer’s home. On their official Australian website, Domino’s states, “While he won’t be taking the to the streets tomorrow, DRU is a big step forward in the work Domino’s is doing in the future commercialisation of this technology. He is cheeky and endearing and we are confident that one day soon he will be joining the Domino’s family and delivering piping hot pizzas to your door.”
The four-wheeled robot travels at speeds of up to 20km/hr and is designed to travel along footpaths, trails, and bike paths. Once DRU reaches the its destination, the customer will have to enter a security code in their phone in order for the robot to open its locked storage compartment where it stores the order.
