Apple is reportedly preparing a major overhaul of Siri that could turn its smart assistant into a chatbot similar to ChatGPT.
The new Siri experience is internally codenamed “Campos” and would support both voice and text inputs.
This chatbot-style assistant is expected to be integrated into iOS 27 and may take centre stage at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.
Apple is reportedly preparing a major overhaul of Siri that could turn its smart assistant into a chatbot similar to ChatGPT. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new Siri experience is internally codenamed “Campos” and would support both voice and text inputs. This chatbot-style assistant is expected to be integrated into iOS 27 and may take centre stage at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. If true, this would mark one of the biggest changes to Siri since it first launched.

This shift would also signal a change in Apple’s public stance on chatbots. Previously, Apple’s senior vice president Craig Federighi said he did not want Siri to become a chatbot. Instead, he said Apple’s AI features should be “integrated so it’s there within reach whenever you need it.” However, growing pressure from rivals appears to be pushing Apple to rethink that approach.
AI chatbots from companies like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic have gained huge popularity over the past year. These chatbots can write, summarise, explain, and hold conversations in ways Siri has struggled to match. Apple’s slower progress in this area has become more noticeable as users compare Siri to newer AI assistants.
Apple may also be feeling added pressure from OpenAI’s plans to move into hardware. That effort is being led by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. A successful AI-focused device from OpenAI could pose a serious challenge to Apple.
We already know that Apple has been falling behind in the AI race. The company delayed the launch of a more personalised Siri several times and spent last year looking for an AI partner, testing technology from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. In the end, Apple chose Google’s Gemini, a partnership both companies confirmed earlier this month.
