Apple may finally improve one of the weaker parts of its Apple Intelligence suite. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the tech giant is planning major upgrades for its AI image generation models in iOS 27. These models currently power features like Genmoji and Image Playground on Apple devices.
SurveyWhen Apple introduced Genmoji and Image Playground with iOS 18.2, the response was mixed. While Genmoji performed decently, Image Playground was criticised for producing low-quality AI images. Compared to other popular AI image tools available today, Apple’s offering felt less polished.
Now, that could change with iOS 27. Gurman wrote, ‘I’ve also reported that Apple is preparing to support third-party AI models — beyond OpenAI’s ChatGPT — for image creation in the redesigned Image Playground app in iOS 27. It turns out, I’m now told, there’s a little more to the story: Apple’s own models for Genmoji and Image Playground have been improved, so quality is getting a big boost this year.’

The report suggests that Apple is working on improving the visual quality of images generated through its in-house AI models. This means users may see more realistic, cleaner and better-looking AI-generated content in the future.
Apple is also expected to expand support for third-party AI image generation tools inside Image Playground. At present, the app supports image creation using ChatGPT. However, Apple could add support for more AI models from other companies as well. The report mentions that Google’s Nano Banana models may also become part of the experience, alongside other competitors.

Apart from quality improvements, Apple is also reportedly working on smarter Genmoji suggestions based on users’ photo libraries and other personal details. More details about these AI upgrades are expected to surface closer to the official iOS 27 announcement.
