Avatar: The Way of Water supports 48 FPS HFR with TrueCut Motion: Here are all the tech used in Avatar 2
HIGHLIGHTS

Avatar The Way of Water will debut in the theatres at 48 FPS HFR.

To counter Soap Opera Effect, TrueCut Motion tech is being used.

Let’s check all the tech used in Avatar 2.

Avatar: The Way of Water is going to hit the theatres on December 16, 2022. The James Cameron movie comes with a lot of new technologies and one of these is that Avatar 2 runs at 48 FPS HFR with TrueCut Motion. Let’s see what this tech is and what other innovations does the new Avatar movie brings to the screen, big or otherwise.

Avatar at 48 FPS HFR with TrueCut Motion: What are these technologies?

Avatar will run at 48 FPS HFR. HFR stands for High Frame Rate. But, content running at such a fast frame rate could result in the infamous ‘Soap Opera Effect’ and to counter that, Pixelworks is employing something called TrueCut Motion. This should present the content as the filmmaker intended.

"TrueCut Motion is delivering cinematic high frame rate only in cinemas today (this is a big week for cinematic high frame rate), but no need to hold your breath, we'll have more to say about TrueCut Motion for home theatres soon," said Pixelworks.

Now, we don’t know how the movie would benefit from 48 FPS as neither UHD Blu-ray nor 4K 3D supports it. Not to mention, Disney+ wherein it would probably stream (as the movie is distributed by 20th Century Fox which comes under Disney).

Forget about home theatres, even cinemas generally run movies at 24 FPS. So, James Cameron aims to use variable refresh rates wherever possible.

Cameron shared a comment on the same at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea. He said, "can theatres support variable frame rate, switching back and forth within the movie between 24fps and 48fps? The answer is no, they just run it at 48fps. In any part of the scene that we want at 24fps, we just double the frames. And so, they actually show the same frame twice, but the viewer doesn’t see it that way. And so, we just we’re essentially using a simple hack to use the high frame rate platform that already exists".

Among a bunch of other technologies that Cameron has used in Avatar: The Way of Water, there’s a newly made camera system with Sony’s Venice cameras capable of producing stereoscopic 3D system. You can read more about this and the whole work that he has put into this project on this GQ profile.
