The Guest Mode allows one to set a data limit before they hand out their device to someone else, while the Wi-Fi Maps feature shows nearby Wi-Fi’s with good quality connection.
In November last year, Google launched an app called Datally that helps users to track and manage their data expenditure. The app has now received four new features called Daily Limit, Guest Mode, Unused Apps and Wi-Fi Map that enable granular control over data expenditure. Google announced the new features via its blog post. Guest Mode allows the user to allocate a set amount of data before handing over your device to someone else. Daily Limit option curbs excessive data consumption by putting a limit on how much data the user can use in a day. When the user exceeds a set limit, a warning will be shown and they can choose to block data for the rest of the day or keep going.
While the Guest Mode is a new addition, the Daily Data limit is a standard option, which is already available on most Android smartphones. However, you will need to dig into the SIM and mobile network settings to find it. Alongside the two new features, the app has also been updated to uninstall unused apps from your device. Google says that 20 percent of mobile data is used in the background by apps that most users haven’t opened in over a month. “Unused Apps shows you the apps that you’re not using, but that are taking up your precious data. With one tap, you can uninstall an unused app and keep your phone from leaking data.” The last feature called Wi-Fi Map aims to make it easier for finding nearby “best quality” Wi-Fi networks for faster data speeds without burning through your data. The user will also be able to rate a network after using it. All the new features are rolling out to the app today.
Google announced the Datally app last year and it’s an initiative under Google's Next Billion Users division that aims to make Internet services more accessible in countries with limited technology infrastructure. “Mobile data is expensive for many people around the world. And what’s worse, it’s hard to figure out where it all goes. That’s why we built Datally, an app that helps you to control, save more and do more with your data. We’ve been testing Datally in the Philippines for the past few months, and people are saving up to 30 percent on their data,” Caesar Sengupta, Vice President, Next Billion Users, Google, said in a press note. The app allows users to view data consumption on an hourly, daily, weekly and monthly basis and get recommendations tailored to save more data.
