Google rolls out indoor maps for desktop web browser
Google has announced it is rolling out an updated version of Google Maps, featuring indoor maps capabilities, to the desktop web browser. So far, Google Maps with indoor maps of malls, airports and other popular hotspots was only available on Android devices. The update means users can view the indoors of popular spots on the web browsers of their desktops or laptops.
While the indoor maps feature may not be as useful on the desktop browser as compared to the mobile version, but if one plans their travel route well ahead of time, then the update can be really great. Google says the desktop version of indoor maps currently only features main floor of buildings. There’s no word yet on when the features to view additional levels will be added. It’s notable the Android version has the ability to view multiple levels of buildings.
The update comes shortly after Google rolled out high-res imagery for its Maps and Earth service. The update brings high resolution aerial and satellite imagery for a number of new cities and added 45-degree imagery for scores of locales across the globe.
So far 164 cities and 108 countries/regions have the high resolution images, including Washington and Austria. The new 45-degree imagery has been applied to 60 cities, 40 of which are located in the U.S. The 3D imagery of a city layout, features a stunning views of landmark buildings when viewed from the Map mode.
