Google rolls out Play Services ver. 6.1, add new drive features, improved Google Fit support and more.
Google has started rolling out a new version of its Play Services, version 6.1. The update brings a number of new features for users and developers. The version will start rolling out over the next few days.
Google Play Services v6.1 will allow developers to test their apps against a more robust version of Google Fit, that will roll out with Android L later this year. Google Fit is a place for apps to send fitness and health-related data and store it, securely, in a single place. The update adds elements of Material Design to the File Picker UI, a new setParents() method, Recent and Starred views and the replacement of the Contents class for a more simple DriveContents class.
Version 6.1 brings enhanced ecommerce support in Google Tag Manager, that will allow developers to easily update tags on mobile apps and measure impressions on their products. Apart from that Google has also added a new completion events feature in Google Drive Android API, that lets you see which actions are committed to the service and get better response time to conflicts.
Google had rolled out Play Services 5.0 in July, the update added support for wearables, an official Android wear companion app, along with big updates to Chromecast, Games, a 'Save to Wallet' button and more. Google introduced an 'Apps for Android Wear' section in the Google Play 5.0 that includes apps like Evernote, Google Maps, Eat24 Food Delivery and Hangouts.
