OnePlus Nord 6 vs Nothing Phone 4a Pro: Which mid-ranger makes more sense?

The OnePlus Nord 6 just made its India debut in the mid-range segment which happens to be one of the most competitive tiers in the India’s smartphone market. It arrives at a time where rumours are rife and reports circulating about OnePlus scaling back its presence in markets such as the US and Europe. In India, however, the mid-range segment remains a priority and the Nord 6 is clearly built to make a statement in it. The Nord 6 goes up against a multitude of phones in this segment but its most direct competition comes from the Nothing Phone 4a Pro which launched last month. Nothing and OnePlus share more history than most, tracing back to the same co-founder, Carl Pei, which makes this a particularly intense rivalry.

Price and storage

The OnePlus Nord 6 starts at Rs 38,999 for the 8GB + 256GB variant and Rs 41,999 for the 12GB + 256GB storage option. The Nothing Phone 4a Pro opens at Rs 39,999 for the base 8GB + 128GB which is a Rs 1,000 more expensive starting point, Rs 42,999 for the 8GB + 256GB variant and climbs to Rs 45,999 for the 12GB + 256GB configuration.

At the 8GB + 256GB level, the Nord 6 and the Phone 4a Pro have a Rs 4,000 gap. The Nord 6’s 12GB + 256GB variant is still cheaper than the 4a Pro’s equivalent at Rs 45,999. That said, both brands are offering bank discounts of up to Rs 3,000–5,000, which can narrow the effective price difference.

Design and build

The Nord 6 measures 8.5 mm and weighs 217 g. The Phone 4a Pro is marginally slimmer at 8 mm, narrower and lighter at 210 g. Nothing uses aircraft-grade aluminium with Gorilla Glass 7i upfront, while OnePlus has a plastic build with its own Crystal Guard glass. The durability gap is significant: the Nord 6 carries four IP ratings: IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K, alongside a MIL-STD-810H military-grade certification. The Phone 4a Pro is rated IP65 only, which covers dust and low-pressure water jets but not full immersion.

Display

Both phones use AMOLED panels sized at 6.78 and 6.83-inch respectively. The Nord 6 runs at up to 165 Hz against the 4a Pro’s 144 Hz. However, the Phone 4a Pro has the brighter peak brightness claim at 5,000 nits compared to 3,600 nits on the Nord 6. The Nord 6 features a dedicated Touch Reflex chip for 3,200 Hz touch sampling and a higher PWM frequency of 3,840 Hz, both of which are relevant to eye comfort and gaming responsiveness. Resolution is Full HD+ with 450 ppi on the Nord 6 against 440 ppi on the 4a Pro.

Performance

This is where the gap is most clear. The Nord 6 runs on the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 with an Adreno 825 GPU. The Phone 4a Pro uses the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 with an Adreno 722 GPU. These are not in the same tier, the 8s Gen 4 is a higher-performing processor and the Nord 6 also uses faster UFS 4.1 storage against UFS 3.1 on the 4a Pro and Bluetooth 6.0 with Wi-Fi 7, compared to Bluetooth 5.4 and Wi-Fi 6 on the 4a Pro.

Cameras

The Nothing Phone 4a Pro has the more capable camera system. It carries three rear cameras: a 50 MP camera that uses Sony LYT700C main sensor, a 50 MP periscope telephoto with 3.5x optical zoom and up to 140x digital zoom and an 8 MP ultrawide. The Nord 6 has a dual camera setup that includes a 50 MP camera which uses a Sony LYTIA-600 main sensor and an 8 MP ultrawide. There’s no optical telephoto at all. Its zoom is limited to 10x digital. On paper, the 4a Pro’s main sensor is also slightly smaller (1/1.56″) compared to the Nord 6’s 1/1.953″ sensor, though both support OIS. For video, the Nord 6 shoots 4K at 60 fps, while the 4a Pro tops out at 4K at 30 fps but supports Dolby Vision and HDR recording.

Battery and charging

The Nord 6’s silicon-carbon 9,000 mAh battery is one of the most largest at this price point. The Phone 4a Pro has a 5,400 mAh battery, so on paper it pales in comparison. Wired charging on the Nord 6 is 80W; on the 4a Pro it is 50W. Reverse wired charging is 27W on the Nord 6 and 7.5W on the 4a Pro. Neither phone supports wireless charging.

Software

The Nord 6 and Nothing Phone 4a Pro run on Android 16 based ColorOS 16 and Nothing OS 4.1 OnePlus promises four generations of Android OS upgrades; Nothing commits to three. Both offer six years of security patches.

Conclusion

The Nord 6 is the stronger performer across chipset, battery, charging and durability. At comparable configurations, it also costs a bit less. The Phone 4a Pro makes up with a brighter display, a more versatile triple-camera system with optical telephoto, Nothing’s distinct design aesthetic with the Glyph Matrix interface and Nothing OS.

If camera versatility, particularly zoom, matters most, the Phone 4a Pro is the only choice between these two. For everything else, the Nord 6 offers a stronger hardware at a lower price.
