Moto E: Camera quality test and comparison with Moto G and Nokia Lumia 520

Moto E: Camera quality test and comparison with Moto G and Nokia Lumia 520
HIGHLIGHTS

While Moto E gets most things right for a Rs 6,999 smartphone, its 5MP fixed focus camera does leave a lot to be desired. We compare its camera quality and performance to its elder brother, Moto G and similarly priced Nokia Lumia 520.

Moto E is undoubtedly the most appealing low-end Android smartphone in the Indian market right now. We take a closer look at the imaging capabilities of the Moto E camera and compare its performance with Moto G and Nokia Lumia 520, both of which sport 5MP sensors, similar to the Moto E. We clicked some pictures and found that the imaging sensor on the Moto E is not capable to handle low light conditions. Even in bright conditions the camera struggles to capture quality sharp pictures as they lack details and colour vibrance. Even the Moto G has a 5MP sensor, but when compared to the Moto E, there is a vast difference.  While the camera on the Moto G has an autofocus system, it also has a better sensor resulting in way better pictures.

Focus: Motorola decided to go with a fixed focus camera on the Moto E, something that they should have avoided. Given that auto focus has become a defacto for smartphones in today's scenario, lack of AF is a shocking omission. Lack of this feature results in massive inconsistencies in terms of focus area, especially when you want to capture images at random instances. We encountered numerous occasions where the subject was out of focus due to the inability of the sensor to direct focus on the desired area and lock it for a better shot.

Image quality: In good to excellent light conditions, Moto E does a decent job of capturing images which are alright for sharing over the web. The images lack the detail levels expected from a good quality 5MP sensor. Post-processing of images does very little to improve the quality of the Moto E camera pics.

Low-light images: Yes, it isn't fair to expect a low-end smartphone to do so well in low-light. Moto E is no exception in low-light situations, images are blurry and noisy, you might be able to get a decent shot, only after taking a dozen shots, hoping one of them comes out good enough.

Speed of capture: Having fixed-focus does help the Moto E in terms of speed. Moto E is pretty quick for its class in terms of response, exhibiting fairly low shutter lag. In low-light situations though, the camera takes a bit longer to complete the capture.
