App development with a heart!

App development with a heart!

Have you ever come across little kids working in a tea stall, and notice they can’t even read the menu on the board? Have you ever thought “I’ll do something for the poor people”, but weren’t able to decide how? Does working for an NGO seem the only option to do social work?

For everyone who thought software and social problems don’t go in tandem, the Google Developer Group, New Delhi is setting a precedent. All you developers building apps for smartphones and monetising it, pause for a moment and take a look at this! What if you can “Code for a Cause”?

The Google Developer Group, New Delhi is organising a hackathon titled, “H-A-C-K 2012 ‘Code for a Cause’” on 16th and 17th June 2012 at the India Habitat Center, New Delhi.

They’re currently looking for developers, designers and NGOs to use their coding skills for social innovation. It’s a great chance for developers to code apps that do good. Help a child to learn, or rescue a damsel in distress – your app can transform someone’s life!

Watch the following video, it speaks for itself.

All you need to do is log on to the website http://gdg-hack.com and get your team (maximum 4 members) registered. Each registered team will be given 24 hours (16-17th June) at India Habitat Center to transform their idea into an app using open source APIs including the Google APIs (developers.google.com). The teams will have to decide on a theme from amongst Education, Health, Information Access, Women Security, Disaster Management and “Others” that covers a range of apps to create awareness in general.

The event expects participation of close to 200 developers. We look forward to seeing a new era of apps! Stay tuned for more!
