HIGHLIGHTS

While Apple hasn’t made any official announcement, the Apple India website mentions that the Apple watch will be available in India from November 6

The Apple Watch is finally coming to India on November 6. While the company has not made an official announcement, The Apple India website mentions that the smartwatch will be available in India from November 6. However, there was no mention of the price of the watch in India. Prices of the Apple Watch start at $349 in the U.S., which is about Rs. 22,600 by direct conversion.

The Apple Watch is available in two sizes and three variants, namely the Apple Watch, Apple Watch Edition and Apple Watch Sport. The Apple Watch and Watch Edition come with sapphire crystal protection on the screen while the Apple Watch Sports comes with an Ion-X glass.  Apple has also used different materials like stainless steel, aluminium, and 18-carat gold for the housing of the watch. The company also developed the S1 chip to power the watch and the device is charged via a magnetic charging port. It also has an integrated heart-rate sensor to double up as a fitness tracker. It also has a built-in mic as well as a speaker and comes integrated with Siri. The Apple Watch also comes with a digital crown and a Force Touch display.

During the launch of the Apple iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, Tim Cook also announced WatchOS 2. The update brings native apps to Apple Watch and users can now download apps directly on the smartwatch.

Apple must price the Apple Watch very carefully in India after the lower than expected sales of the Apple iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. It was reported that Apple was hoping to sell 12 lakh devices in India during the October-December quarter after it launched both the device on October 16 in the country. However, Apple’s trade partners said that Apple had hoped to triple the number of bookings as compared to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus but bookings for the phone rose by just 10 to 15 per cent. This was attributed to the fact that the price of the new phones are almost Rs. 9,000 more than last year’s. In fact, many people in India are choosing to buy the new devices in the grey market rather than through official channels as they can get the device cheaper.
