MTNL has now redefined a minimum 2 Mbps speed for all new broadband plans.
MTNL Mumbai in an effort to provide better internet speed to its broadband users, has announced an increase in its broadband speed to 2Mbps for all new broadband plans.
MTNL Mumbai announced that the new improved speeds come in lieu of the National Telecom Policy (NTP) 2012 that has stressed the need to upgrade existing broadband speed of 256 Kbps to 512 Kbps and subsequently to 2 Mbps by 2015 and thereafter take it to at least 100 Mbps.
MTNL had introduced minimum speed of 1 Mbps across all broadband plans six months back and has now upgraded it to 2Mbps. An MTNL company spokesperson stated, "MTNL is the market leader in fixed broadband space in Mumbai with highest market share and pioneer in providing best telecom services at affordable and competitive cost to Mumbaikars. The National Telecom Policy 2012 had laid special emphasis to upgrade existing broadband speed of 256 Kbps to 512 Kbps and subsequently to 2 Mbps by 2015. MTNL has been ahead of schedule."
According to National Telecom Policy 2012, broadband speed has to be upgraded to, "provide affordable and reliable broadband-on-demand by the year 2015 and to achieve 175 million broadband connections by the year 2017 and 600 million by the year 2020 at a minimum 2Mbps of download speed and making higher speeds of at least 100 Mbps available on demand."
Telecom regulator TRAI is also planning to set a minimum download speed for mobile internet users. The telecom regulator has just released a consultation paper to check the minimum download speeds for mobile phones. TRAI says in the paper, “The Standards of Quality of Service for Wireless Data Services Regulations, 2012” aims to examine the benchmark for “minimum download speed” being offered through various technologies, so that the minimum download speeds are transparently made available to the consumers. This will help mobile users in getting better internet speeds on their mobile phones.
