Govt plans Wi-Fi Hotspots in major cities under Digital India initiative

Major cities and tourist centers to get Wi-Fi Hotspots soon under Digital India program.

Department of Telecom is planning to make Wi-Fi hot spots in cities with population of over 10 lakh and in tourist centers under the Digital India program.

Recently DoT held meetings with telecom operators for the scheme. according to sources,  whether the service will be free or chargeable has not been decided yet. “We are planning to provide Wi-Fi hot spots in cities with a population of over 1 million and in tourist centers. Meetings have been held with telcos regarding the same but we are yet to take a call if it will be a free or chargeable service,” the source added.

Modi government has approved Rs 1 Lakh crore under the Digital India programme, which will be utilized to transform the country into a digitally empowered knowledge economy. The programme will be monitored by a committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) which will accord approval for projects. The initiative includes projects that aim to ensure that government services are available to citizens electronically and people get benefit of the latest information and communication technology.

The government has allocated Rs 20,000 crore for mobile connectivity in rural areas under the initiative. Mobile connectivity will be provided to 55000 villages over a five year period. Government has also launched dot bharat domain last week in 8 Indian languages and will add all Indian languages in the near future, according to Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.
