HIGHLIGHTS

Xiaomi CEO has revealed that all the Xiaomi phones over CNY 2,000 (approx. Rs 20,000) will have 5G capabilities.

Jun has already announced that the company will launch at least 10 phones with 5G support in 2020.

Chinese carriers have already started accepting pre-subscriptions for 5G.

A couple of months ago, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun announced that the company will launch at least 10 phones with 5G support in 2020. It will make Xiaomi one of the first companies to launch 5G phones next year. Now, Jun has revealed in a keynote that all the Xiaomi phones over CNY 2,000 (approx. Rs 20,000) will have 5G capabilities. He announced the latest development at the annual China Mobile Global Partner Conference.

In his keynote, Jun said that the plans are to add 70 million 5G users in 2020 and to expand the 5G application to over 100 industries. The Chinese phone manufacturer has already launched two 5G phones – the Mi Mix 3 5G and Mi 9 Pro 5G – in the local market this year. According to Jun, the demands for these phones exceeded Xiaomi’s expectations that led to supply chain issues. Therefore, the company has been prompted to launch 5G models for the high, middle, and low-end price tiers, next year.

Lei has previously said, “People in the industry fear that next year 4G models won’t sell, this is a step you have no choice but to take, so we hope that operators can speed up their expansion of 5G base stations.”

For reference, Chinese carriers have already started accepting pre-subscriptions for 5G and around  9.3 million users have signed up for the next-generation communication technology even before it is rolled out in China. The carriers are allowing people to sign up for 5G via text message. It is expected that China will be the largest early adopter of 5G infrastructures as more consumers are expected to migrate towards 5G in 2020.

According to Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) projections, the demand for 5G smartphones could reach 300 million units by 2020, which equals to 10 percent rise in 5G phones.
