The Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 will be a beefed-up version of the Snapdragon 845 and will primarily power laptops, tablets and hybrid PCs.
If information circulating the internet is to be believed, then Microsoft and Dell are planning to release foldable smartphone/laptop hybrids running on the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 platform. Currently, Qualcomm’s latest chipset, the Snapdragon 845, powers flagship smartphones. The only flagship running on the platform in India is the OnePlus 6. The Snapdragon 850 is apparently just a Snapdragon 845 chip that’s been modified to run at faster speeds. The Snapdragon 850 is aimed at Windows ultra-portable devices. It features 8-cores with the “big” cluster clocked higher than the Snapdragon 845.
It seems that the chipset will run Microsoft’s recently patented all screen foldable device.
This isn’t the first time we will see PC hardware powered by a mobile chipset. At its annual Snapdragon Technology Summit, Qualcomm announced Snapdragon 835-powered Always Connected Windows PCs bringing in all day battery life, gigabit LTE connectivity and Windows 10 S operating system.
The Snapdragon 835-powered PCs have the Qualcomm X16 Gigabit modem for 5G connectivity and have more than 20 hours of battery life. Although we'd like to make it clear that the 20 hour battery life can only be achieved when the brightness of the device is kept low and the processor isn't under heavy strain like running games or heavy apps. The devices are slim and sleek with Windows 10 S at the heart of the OS. The processor is clocked at 2.21GHz. Further, the hybrid laptops use a fan less design, similar to Intel's M series processors we have seen power devices like the MacBook.
