Sony Xperia smartphones to get Android 4.0 ICS update in mid-April
Sony has detailed timing for the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update that will be rolled out to its Xperia smartphones.
Sony on its blog announced Xperia devices will start receiving the ICS update by mid-April. The company, however, on developer website pointed out that latest OS could be less stable on the Xperia phones (launched in 2011) as compared to its predecessor Gingerbread. Sony also announced that its Tablet S and Table P will receive the latest Android upgrade in May.
“Because this update is a significant revamp of some of your phone’s features, we want to make sure you take a conscious and informed decision to upgrade, so that you continue to enjoy optimum experiences from your Xperia smartphones,” said Sony.
The first Xperia devices to receive the upgrade will be Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V and Xperia Ray. Roll out of the update will begin in mid-April and continue over 4-6 following weeks. Devices such as Xperia Arc, Xperia Play, Xperia Neo, Xperia Mini, Xperia Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, Xperia Active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will receive the update by May-end or early June. Sony will not be releasing the ICS update over-the-air. Users will need to install the update via a PC or Mac connection.
Sony says the availability and scheduling of the software upgrade and specific models upgradeable to Android 4.0 will vary by market and carrier requirements. Back in November last year, Sony had announced that its entire 2011 line of Android smartphones would be receiving the ICS update. Sony then said users could expect updates to land by March-end or beginning of April.
