Samsung completes Galaxy Fold redesign with re-engineered hinge, screen improvements: Report
HIGHLIGHTS

Samsung has reportedly completed the redesign of its Galaxy Fold smartphone.

Sources tell Bloomberg that there’s still ambiguity on the sale date of the device.

The company has reportedly re-engineered the hinge and made improvements to the protective film of the screen, making it impossible to peel off.

Samsung is possibly ready to re-launch its foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold. The device was reportedly undergoing a redesign after early review units of the phone malfunctioned due to issues with a protective film on the screen. Samsung later recalled the said review units and since then, the launch of the Galaxy Fold has been pushed several times.

Now, Bloomberg reports that Samsung has finally finished redesigning the Galaxy Fold and it looks like the device will be made available in time for the holiday gifting season. The publication, citing sources in the company, reports that Samsung has re-engineered the hinge on the Galaxy Fold to make it flush with the display. The company has also made improvements to the protective film of the screen, stretching it all the way to the outer bezels so as to make it impossible to peel off.

“That tension makes the film feel harder and more a natural part of the device rather than a detachable accessory, they added. The consequent protrusion, almost imperceptible to the naked eye, may help reduce the chance of a crease developing in the middle of the screen over time, one of the people said,” Bloomberg’s Sam Kim and Sohee Kim write.

Further, the publication reports that Samsung will soon start shipping components for the Galaxy Fold, like the display and battery, to an assembly plant in Vietnam. However, there is still no set sale date for the foldable phone and it is unlikely to show up alongside the Galaxy Note 10 series on August 7.

It looks like Huawei could beat Samsung to launch of a foldable smartphone. Reports suggest that Huawei’s Mate X foldable phone could get a September launch after being delayed to market. Samsung will try its best to beat Huawei, but for now, five months after their announcement, foldable phones from both companies are still a sight for sore eyes.
