OnePlus 7 Pro doesn't come with headphone jack converter in the box

The new UBS-C to 3.5mm jack has seen a price hike in some markets

The OnePlus 7 Pro has been one of the most hotly anticipated smartphones for the first half of 2019, and by most accounts, it did not disappoint. A top-class display, an elegant build and a generously flexible camera stack do make the OnePlus 7 Pro feel like a no-compromise device, but sadly that is not entirely the case. Last year, OnePlus decided to ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack, but this year, the company has decided to not provide the headphone converter in the box. However, it gets worse.

OnePlus does not include a USB-C to 3.5mm headphone jack converter in the box of the OnePlus 7 Pro, which should be upsetting for any first-time buyer. On top of that, the company has also doubled the price of this now separate accessory. Earlier, the headphone jack converter sold for $8 as an accessory when it was launched alongside the OnePlus 6T. Now, the company has hiked up the price of the accessory to $12.95. Interestingly, the price hike isn’t universal, with countries like India still showing a much lower price of Rs 390 for the adapter.

While the move may upset many, it does make some sense. Up until now, the USB-C ports on the OnePlus smartphones all conformed to the USB 2.0 standard, capable of audio output only. The OnePlus 7 Pro’s Type-C port is USB 3.1 Gen 1. What this means is that the port is now capable of a lot more things that just fast charging and audio. You will now be able to output video from the port as well, something devices like the Samsung S series has been able to do for a while. In order to ensure proper functioning, OnePlus must have had to upgrade the adapter with the appropriate connectors to ensure proper functioning. This leads to a thicker cable-set and of course, a slight hike in pricing.  It sure would have been nice of OnePlus to include this accessory in the box and not go the Apple way.

While the price of the adapter continues to be Rs 390 in India, the accessory is currently listed as out of stock. It is possible that this is still the older adapter and that the pricing would be updated once the new one is in stock. We will update the story in the event of any developments.
