OnePlus 5 will launch this summer, here’s what we know so far
  • The reason why the phone is called the OnePlus 5 is because a number of the company’s employees are fans of former NBA player, Robert Horry, who wore the number five jersey

OnePlus’ next flagship, tipped to be called the One Plus 5, will launch this summer. The company has confirmed the launch timeframe to The Verge. The company also confirmed the phone's name and the reason behind it. Previous reports had suggested that the phone was not called the OnePlus 4 because the number four is considered unlucky in China. However, the company says that the reason it has named it five is because of former NBA player Robert Horry, who wore the number five jersey. A number of employees at the company are reportedly fans of the player and the company's Shenzhen office sports two of his painting.

Details of the OnePlus 5 have not yet been confirmed, but the leaks and rumours have given us a hint as to what to expect. OppoMart even listed the device on its website. Here’s what we know about the OnePlus 5 so far:

OnePlus is expected to stick to a 5.5-inch screen with the OnePlus 5. However, the company may finally move on from the Full HD resolution it has used in its previous smartphones. The company is tipped to shift to a QHD display with a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels for its upcoming smartphone.

OnePlus usually powers is flagships with Qualcomm’s latest flagship platforms and this year may be no different. The OnePlus 5 is expected to come with Snapdragon 835, which uses an octa-core configuration with eight Kryo 280 cores clocked up to 2.45GHz. The platform is also manufactured using the 10nm process.

The OnePlus 3/OnePlus 3T(₹ 24999 at amazon) are amongst the few smartphone in India to offer 6GB of RAM and the OnePlus 5 may offer the same amount. However, there are reports suggesting that the company might offer a variant with 8GB of RAM. The device is also expected to offer either 64GB or 128GB of inbuilt storage.

A few weeks ago, a leaked image had suggested that OnePlus was planning to equip it next flagship with a dual-rear camera setup. However, while the authenticity of the image was doubtful, the rumours just wouldn’t go away. Oppomart even used the same image for its listing and claims that the device will come with two 12MP rear cameras, as well as an 8MP front facing camera.

The original OnePlus 3 sported a 3000mAh battery, which was bumped up to 3400mAh with the OnePlus 3T. With the OnePlus 5, the company is expected to offer a 3600mAh battery. The company will most likely also offer the device with its own Dash Charge fast charging technology.

OppoMart as listed the device at $449, which is approximately Rs. 28,800. This is slightly more expensive that the launch price of the OnePlus 3 in India.

Of course, none of these specifications or the price has been confirmed by OnePlus just yet and we’ll just have to wait and see to know exactly what the company has up its sleeve.
