HIGHLIGHTS

Google is releasing the theft detection lock feature for Android smartphones.

The theft detection lock uses machine learning to identify if someone snatches your phone from your hand and attempts to run away.

When this happens, the phone automatically locks itself, preventing the thief from accessing any sensitive information.

Losing your smartphone can be a nightmare, not only because of the device itself but also due to the risk of your personal data falling into the wrong hands. Fortunately, Google is stepping up its efforts to help protect Android users with a theft detection system designed to make stolen phones practically useless to thieves.

Google is releasing the theft detection lock feature for Android smartphones, which ensures that even if your phone gets stolen, your data remains secure. This feature is currently being rolled out in the US, and it was first spotted on the newly launched Xiaomi 14T Pro, according to Mishaal Rahman on Threads.

The update includes three important security features: theft detection lock, offline device lock, and remote lock. Let’s break down what these do.

The theft detection lock uses machine learning to identify if someone snatches your phone from your hand and attempts to run away, whether on foot or in a vehicle. When this happens, the phone automatically locks itself, preventing the thief from accessing any sensitive information. This feature kicks in immediately, offering instant protection.

Another feature, the offline device lock, comes into play if the thief tries to cut off your phone’s internet connection. If the phone stays offline for too long, it will lock itself, making it harder for the thief to bypass security. This means that even without an internet connection, the thief won’t be able to get into your phone.

Finally, the remote lock feature allows you to lock your stolen phone from a distance. Using Google’s Find My Device manager, you can secure your phone remotely, giving you peace of mind that your personal data is safe, even if the device is in someone else’s hands.

These features have been in beta testing since August, and now Google is rolling them out to eligible Android phones. To ensure you can take advantage of these anti-theft protections, make sure your phone is running the latest version of Google Play services.
