Micromax working on a feature phone with solar panel

Micromax is reportedly working on a mobile phone that will have a built-in solar charger. The panel will charge the phone within 3 hours and will give 1.5 hours of talktime.

Micromax has a strong base in the Indian mobile phone market. The Indian manufacturer is already giving hard time to other manufacturers with its wide range of low-cost devices, including dual-SIM smartphones. Micromax has now forayed into the tablet market with FunBook tablet. Micromax has given the device a very competitive price of Rs. 6,499, taking on other budget tablets in the market. The main USP of the FunBook tablet is that it is one of the handful devices in India to run the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich platform.

“We have been at the forefront of innovation. We were the first to launch long battery life phones, dual SIM phones and many more. Our next innovation is to get rid of the mobile phone charger by including a solar panel in our next phone. This solar charger will top up the charge in 3 hours to support 1.5 hours of talktime,” says Rahul Sharma, co-founder and executive director, Micromax.

The solar powered Micromax device is going to be a feature phone not a smartphone, according to Rahul Sharma. It’s learnt that Micromax is not the only one to come up with this concept. Vodafone has already launched a mobile phone that uses a solar panel for charging. Vodafone’s VF 247 is available in the market for Rs. 1,500.

More details about the specifications of the Micromax device are likely to available after the launch, which is expected to happen

This is not the first mobile phone to implement a solar panel as a means of charging as in the past, Vodafone have released the VF 247 priced at Rs.1,500. The launch of the Micromax handset is scheduled to take place within a week and when it is announced all the features of the handset will come to light.
