A Kickstarter campaign for an external GPU dock that can be attached to a MacBook to improve its graphics capabilities has already crossed its intended goal. Called the Wolfe, the device can be attached to any laptop with a Thunderbolt port, the compnay says is especially aimed at MacBooks. It is available in two variants called the Wolfe and Wolfe Pro. The standard variant sports an Nvidia GTX 950 GPU with 768 cores operating at 1024MHz. The Pro sports a Nvidia GTX 970 GPU with 1664 cores operating at 1050MHz. This makes it ideal for graphic intensive tasks such as gaming or even Virtual Reality. The company notes that the Wolfe Pro can offer performance increase by up to 10 times. The Wolfe is compatible with Thunderbolt 1, 2, and 3.
Those interested in the Wolfe can donate $449 (approx. Rs. 30,100) to get their hands on the device. While it was possible to get the device for less (there was even a DIY version), these options are closed now. Those planning to get the Pro will have to donate $599 (approx. Rs. 40,100). The standard Wolfe is estimated to start shipping from February next year, while the Pro is expected to start shipping a month later.
This setup is similar to the one used by the Razer Blade Stealth ultrabook laptop. The device is 0.52-inches thin, and to get to that size, the company had to avoid putting a powerful graphics card inside the device. However, users can connect the ultrabook to an external graphics card enclosure called the Razer Core. The enclosure can house most PCI Express graphics card.
