Security codes may soon be a thing of the past

Google is planning to make the two-step verification process a lot simpler. Earlier, users were required to sign in via a security key or a verification code that was sent to their phones. Now, users will get a prompt that will let them know that a sign-in is being attempted. It will notify users about the city that the login is being attempted from as well as the device. Users can then simply approve the attempt or deny it. The update should be available to all Android users in the next three days via an update to Google Play Services, while iOS users will need to have the Google Search app installed in order to use Google Prompt.

The feature can be enabled by going to the 'My Account' section and heading to Sign-in & Security > Signing in to Google > 2-Step Verification. Users will then choose which option they would prefer for the second step of the verification process. Google also informs users that Security Keys, and Google Prompt cannot be enabled at the same time. Google also notes that a data connection is required for the feature to work.

Earlier this month, Google came up with a new way of locating lost Android and iOS smartphones via the My Account hub. The Find My Phone section in the hub would bring up a list of phones owned by the user and clicking on any of them brings up a list of options. This included ringing the device, locating on Google Maps, or locking the device with a password and set a message for anyone who finds it.
