Apple’s new camera patent promises to make images more life-like
Apple files patent for a new digital camera that uses prisms to create brighter and clearer images.
Apple has filed a patent for a new three-sensor camera for splitting colors and getting clearer and brighter images even in low light conditions. The technology could be incorporated in Apple's iPhone 7 and may come close to DSLR like images.
The patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is titled “Digital Camera with Light Splitter.” The technology uses a three-sensor prism-based camera module which slits light in red, blue and green colors and each color is then picked up by an independent sensor thereby maximizing pixel array resolution. The resultant images are brighter and truer to life in color. It would also result in clearer photos taken in low-light situations.
Apple's design uses light splitting techniques used in current optics packages marketed by Canon, Panasonic, Nikon and other big players in the camera space. Digital camera sales have been eaten away by smartphone sales, so it’s not surprising that Apple is looking for ways to improve photography technology in its iOS devices. Apple has used images clicked by its iPhone 6 for advertising its latest iPhone 6 and 6 Plus smartphones.
The technology could be used in Apple’s next iPhone, which is expected to retain a similar shape to the iPhone 6 while adding features such as Force Touch, that was introduced in the Apple Watch. According to rumors apple has been trying to improve the camera of its next iPhone and this latest patent technology could be used in the device.
