Want to save on AC bills this summer? Here’s what the government recommends

Summer temperatures soar, bringing warm days and a rising electricity bill, as you need an air conditioner to find relief from the scorching heat. While an AC provides optimum cooling and comfort, the high electricity bills certainly take a toll on our pockets. However, it is as crucial to minimise the amount of electricity you use as it is to stay cool.

With some smart moves, you can save on your hefty AC bills without compromising on your comfort. Want to Know how? Here are five smart tips to stay cool without burning a hole in your pocket.

How to save your AC bills this summer

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency has shared some tips to save on AC bills via X (formerly Twitter).

Opt for an AC with high BEE ratings

Opting for a 5-star BEE rating AC can help you save up to 25–30% more energy compared to a 2- or 3-star model. Over time, this adds up to significant savings on your power bills, especially when ACs run for extended periods. Plus, it is environmentally friendly with lower carbon emissions.

Set the AC temperature to 24°C or more

Most users often think that reducing the AC temperature will cool the room quickly; however, setting your AC to 18 degrees C won’t make any difference except for increasing your electricity bill. According to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, every 1°C increase saves nearly 6% of your electricity bill. Hence, a temperature range of 24 to 26 degrees will save almost 36% of the energy bill, striking a balance between comfort and energy efficiency.

Maintain your AC regularly

Dust and debris reduce the efficiency of your AC. Hence, timely servicing plays a vital role in maintaining optimal performance and reducing electricity usage. This will improve your AC’s efficiency as well as extend its lifespan.

Use a ceiling fan along with the AC for fast and effective cooling.

You don’t always need to increase the AC’s temperature to feel cooler. Using a ceiling fan can help make a room feel cooler in less time by circulating cool air more effectively.

Use blackout curtains to block heat

Blackout curtains work as a shield during summer days. They block the optimal amount of sunlight, preventing your room from heating up and resulting in a reduced AC workload. You can also use reflective window films to bounce the heat outside and let the cooling effect stay for a while.

Leverage natural ventilation during morning and evening.

Leveraging natural ventilation during cooler periods, such as early mornings and evenings, can reduce the need for continuous use of the air conditioner. You can also open windows for cross-ventilation to expel hot air outside your room and create a naturally comfortable indoor environment.
