TRAI starts rolling out CNAP: What is it and how it works

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has started rolling out a network-based caller identification system called Calling Name Presentation (CNAP). This service aims to help mobile users identify who is calling them by showing a verified name along with the phone number. The move comes at a time when spam calls and fake callers have become a daily problem for people.

TRAI approved the CNAP framework in October 2025. Following this, telecom operators started live testing the service last month. The rollout is now happening gradually across different networks. CNAP is said to be active for most mobile users in India by March or April 2026.

Today, many people avoid answering unknown numbers because callers often pretend to be bank officials, courier agents, or government representatives. By showing a verified name, CNAP will help users quickly judge whether a call is genuine or suspicious.

What is CNAP and how it works

CNAP is different from regular caller ID services like Truecaller. Currently, phones usually display only the caller’s number unless the number is saved in contacts or identified by third-party apps. These apps often rely on crowd-sourced data, which may not always be accurate.

With CNAP, the caller’s name is fetched directly from official telecom records. When a person makes a call, the receiver’s telecom operator checks a secure Calling Name (CNAM) database. The verified name linked to that SIM card is then displayed on the recipient’s screen almost instantly.

According to the regulator, CNAP will be enabled by default for all users. However, individuals who do not want their name to appear on outgoing calls can opt out by contacting their telecom operator. .

CNAP is expected to play an important role in fighting call-related fraud and making phone communication safer and more transparent for users across India.
