Toymaker Mattel brings Barbie on a hoverboard
It's 2016 and Barbie has to remain contemporary. What better way to do that than a hoverboard right?
I bought a Barbie for my 5-year-old niece recently. Upon delivery, I couldn’t help but reflect on the quaint doll that my niece so enjoyed. It brought back memories of those childhood days, when my sister would neatly arrange all her barbies alongside their kitchen utencils etc. and I’d invariably end up destroying the setup, sometimes with a misdirected kick on a football and other times, I suspect, for sheer joy. A little older, Barbie would still be around us all, in the form of the famous Aqua song I’m a Barbie girl. Eventually though, we all outgrew Barbie, even though the iconic doll kept up with the times.
Note: To men shaking their heads fervently at the thought of having ‘played’ with a Barbie doll. Don’t kid yourselves. You may not have played with them the way your sister did, but you’re more than familiar with what they are.

It’s time for the next step though, and perhaps the ultimate step. But how can Barbie be contemporary? Simple, by riding a hoverboard. More importantly, Barbie’s hoverboard actually hovers and can be controlled by a remote control. It’s actually a quadrotor drone, with Barbie, in a balancing pose over it. The drone has been adjusted to support the extra weight of the doll as well and children can actually fly the thing! Yeah, we really didn’t have the best toys when we were young.
