According to industry estimates cited by Seagate, video data volumes are set to surge sharply over the next five years as AI systems add layers of metadata, summaries and annotations to video streams. This shift is already transforming how organisations use video, moving beyond passive surveillance to searchable, actionable intelligence across sectors such as smart cities, retail, transportation and critical infrastructure.
To meet this demand, Seagate announces its new 32TB hard drives across its Exos, SkyHawk AI and IronWolf Pro product lines. According to the company, these drives are based on its proven CMR technology and are intended to provide the scale, reliability, and performance required for AI workloads in both edge and data centres. The approach is similar to architectures already used in hyperscale cloud deployments based on Seagate’s Mozaic platform, allowing enterprises to extend similar capabilities into hybrid and multi-cloud environments.
According to Seagate executives, high-capacity hard drives remain critical to AI adoption, particularly for video analytics, where massive amounts of data must be efficiently stored, processed, and archived. With applications ranging from faster investigations and automated alerts to compliance tracking and operational insights, storage infrastructure has become a bottleneck for many organisations experimenting with AI-powered video systems.
