Norton-approved jeans come with built-in RFID blocking to stop rogue readers.
Norton has developed a pair of jeans and a blazer with RFID blocking technology that will prevent thieves from stealing information from passports and contactless credit cards.
Security Software maker Norton has teamed up with San Francisco-based Betabrand to make the READY Active Jeans and Work-It Blaze with radio frequency identification (RFID)-blocking fabrics in the pockets. The pants include two protected pockets, one in front and one in the back, while the blazer has just one pocket.
According to the crowd funding page for the jeans, Norton and BetaBrand claim “that more than 10 million identities are digitally pick pocketed every year” and “70% of all credit cards will be vulnerable to such attacks” by 2015.
Betabrand CEO and founder Chris Lindland stated that the two companies started working together in October to develop the design and the silver-based material to block signals. The products were developed by Betabrand's "think-tank," where early backers get a discount on the products that end up in production.
The RFID jeans have already surpassed the funding goal and the company plans to ship them in February. However the Blazer will be launched only in mid-March 2015 if it reaches it funding goal. The jeans are a modified version of a popular one that the company already makes but are priced $20 more at $151 for the added materials. Once the promotion is over the jeans will retail at $168. The blazer is priced at $198 but is currently available at a 30 percent discount.
