The Indian government has summoned Meta’s global team on August 5 and 6 to get explanations over the company’s content moderation policies. Aside from that, the management of child sexual abuse material and removal of stuff from verified accounts will also be discussed during the exchange. Facebook briefly removed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s video in the Indian subcontinent, raising issues about Meta’s automated moderation mechanisms and accountability. The initial answer by the tech giant was not adequate to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Now, officials are expected to ask Meta to explain why such lapses occurred and what changes it plans to make to ensure compliance with Indian laws and prevent similar mistakes in the future.
SurveyIT Secretary S Krishnan said the government expects greater clarity from Meta on how it plans to comply with Indian laws and strengthen its systems. He said the discussions will cover several issues, including the handling of child sexual abuse material, safeguards around synthetically generated content, and protection for verified accounts belonging to prominent personalities.
Krishnan said there is now a clearer understanding of India’s legal requirements and what compliance should look like. He added that the government wants to understand how Meta intends to ensure that these standards are met consistently.
‘There are a range of issues. The CSAM issue was raised, and what measures have been taken regarding that? Synthetic, regenerated information to what extent is that being looked at? Then, of course, for prominent personalities, when they have verified accounts, if content gets taken down, there have to be safeguards,’ Krishnan said.
He also noted that the government wants to know why some of Meta’s systems have not worked as expected and what challenges the company has faced in implementing effective moderation.
The meeting comes after the concerns were raised about Meta when Prime Minister Modi’s Facebook video was removed for a short time and then restored. The incident led to criticism of Facebook’s content moderation system, with questions about whether an automated system mistakenly removed a video from a verified account.
Meta has expressed regret over the video removal incident, and reports also claim that the company is also willing to issue an apology. However, the government is not focusing only on this one incident. It wants clear answers about bigger issues such as how content is moderated, how platforms are held accountable, and how users are kept safe. The meeting’s outcome could influence how Indian authorities work with one of the world’s biggest social media companies in the future.
