The company will be overhauling the design for Gmail in coming weeks and introducing new features like quick replies, offline support and more.
Gmail for web could soon be updated with new features along with a completely overhauled UI as well. As per an email by G-Suite administrators obtained by The Verge, the Gmail for web will now get a new look and allow users to access G-Suite apps like Google calendar from within. The new features will be available for G-Suite administrators as part of the “Early Adoption Program" (EAP) and for select users with personal Gmail accounts. The redesign will be rolling out to the general public at a later date as it is yet to be announced. The Smart Replies feature, which is already available for Gmail on mobile, will finally make its debut in the web interface.
The overall interface of the email service is expected to follow the Material Design guidelines a lot more closely and users will also get an option to hit snooze on their emails, along with offline support. All these features were announced by Google back in its NEXT Live EMEA event last year. In a statement to the Verge, Google said, “We’re working on some major updates to Gmail (they’re still in draft phase), we need a bit more time to compose ourselves, so can’t share anything yet—archive this for now, and we’ll let you know when it’s time to hit send.” The offline support feature will be rolled out by June 2018.
The new features come after Google announced another major feature for its email service. The company says that it will implement Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) technology for Gmail later this year, which will allow developers to make the service more “engaging, interactive and dynamic” with “actionable” email experiences. In simpler terms, this means that users will be able to browse the web from within emails. AMP is an open-source framework which was originally designed for making web pages load faster on mobile phones. You can read more about it here.
