With the rise in COVID-19 cases in India, the Union Health Ministry has advised people to take precautionary measures to prevent infection. More than 1,010 active cases have been reported so far as of May 27. The new variant named JN.1, followed by NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, has been detected in multiple states. It is said to be a sub-lineage of the Omicron variant. While there’s nothing to panic about with the COVID-19 JN.1 variant, it’s better to keep an eye on associated symptoms and take care of yourself, such as using masks in public settings, practising social distancing, and more.
Additionally, people can also download health and emergency apps to keep health services and the COVID-19 helpline readily available. Here’s what we know about the JN.1 variant and five essential safety apps to have on your phone.
New COVID-19 variants and their symptoms
After the JN.1 variant, two new strains – NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 have been detected in India, which carry an additional mutation. While scientists closely monitor these variants to determine their transmissibility and early symptoms, they are reported to be similar to those observed in earlier Omicron subvariants. Some of the initial symptoms are mild fever, cough, sore throat, runny or congested nose, headache, fatigue, and body or muscle aches.
