Android 16 may rollout earlier than you think: Here’s release timeline, features and other details

Unlike last year’s Android 15 update at I/O 2024, Google has picked an early date to showcase Android 16. The tech giant has hosted The Android Show: I/O edition ahead of the main event to introduce upcoming Android 16 and WearOS updates. During the event, the company also hinted at an early release along with other features, including Find Hub and security features.

For the uninformed, Google usually rolls out the latest Android update with the launch of Pixel devices, and if Google follows the same timeline, this year’s Pixel 10 series will debut with the latest OS. Here’s everything you need to know about the rollout of Android 16 and its features.

Android 16 release timeline

While wrapping The Android Show on May 13, Google reportedly confirmed that the Android 16 stable update will roll out starting next month. Samsung and other phone brands are also said to begin releasing their Android 16-based custom skin this summer. Does this mean the early arrival of the Pixel 10 series?

Notably, the latest Android update has always arrived with the new Google Pixel phones, followed by other smartphone brands. So, this year too, we can expect Google to follow a similar trend by introducing the Pixel 10 series sooner than expected. However, there is no official confirmation on the launch of the upcoming Pixel devices yet.

Android 16 features

Google has already shared the glimpses of the upcoming Android 16 and WearOS with the new Material 3 Expressive UI. The interface will get major upgrades, including more fluid animations, live activity notifications, and personalisation options.

Additionally, the upcoming update will include a new Find Hub to help users locate Android devices, accessories, and tags—all in one place. The feature will use UWB (ultrawideband) for more precise tracking and will be active even without mobile networks. It will use the phone’s satellite connectivity to track devices.

Furthermore, the update will also provide AI-based Advanced Spam Protection to prevent fraudulent calls and messages.
