Amazon Alexa app goes live in India for iOS and Android ahead of Echo shipments

The Alexa app has gone live just in time as shipments of the Echo smart speakers begins today. The app comes with a host of local skills for News, Music, cabs and more.

The Amazon Echo is available in India and to set it up you will need the Alexa app which has been released for iOS and Android in the country. Echo users can log on to the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store respectively to download the app. The Alexa app is useful for a number of things including changing settings quickly, monitoring your previous requests, monitoring what's playing, creating new routines and more. Users can also create to do lists and shopping lists through the app, as well as have the Echo speakers read out the news, order a cab and much more. 

Amazon has partnered with Indian companies and brands to create India-specific skills for Alexa and the Echo. This includes NDTV, Ola, Saavn, Sportskeeda, Syska, Times of India, Indian Express, Uber and many more. For music, users can access Saavn, Amazon Music and TuneIn radio. 

The Echo Dot has an MRP of Rs 4,499 but is available for Rs 3,149 on Amazon's India website. The Amazon Echo on the other hand has an MRP of Rs 9,999 but is available at Rs 6,999 on Amazon as an introductory offer. The Echo Plus with built in smart home hub has an MRP of Rs 14,999 but is available at Rs 10,499 in India. 

The Amazon Echo is the first smart speaker to launch in India. Google announced the Google Home last year. This year Google announced the Google Home Mini and Google Home Max to take on the Amazon Echo Dot and the Apple HomePod respectively. However, none of the Google Home speakers have officially made their way to Indian shores.
