The latest round of job cuts at Microsoft has affected one of the longest-serving leaders. Kevin LaChapelle, a senior Xbox executive who spent 37 years at Microsoft, has confirmed that he was among those laid off during the company’s latest restructuring. The company recently announced to cut around 3,200 jobs across its Xbox division. Around 1,600 employees lost their jobs immediately, while the remaining layoffs will take place throughout FY27.

After losing his job, LaChapelle shared an emotional message on LinkedIn, looking back at some of the biggest moments of his career and thanking the people who supported him during his time at the company. LaChapelle wrote, “I will add my name to the list of people who were laid off today at Xbox. This ends my 37 years at Microsoft.”

LaChapelle said he worked in several teams across Microsoft. He said his favourite memories came from leading the engineers who built Xbox’s Backward Compatibility program. “I have worked in many different parts of the company, and I will say my fondest memories are of leading the team of very talented engineers who built the Xbox Backward Compatibility program,” he wrote.

After that, LaChapelle led the team that created Xbox Cloud Gaming. “I am a firm believer that all entertainment will eventually become streamed to you wherever you are,” he added. He also said he looks forward to seeing how Xbox continues to evolve.

He ended his post by saying, “I will say that one person truly made a lasting impact on me while in Xbox and I want to thank Kareem Choudhry for being the best manager I had at Microsoft and ultimately someone I am happy to say is a good friend.”

LaChapelle joined Microsoft in 1989 as a software engineer, and later he took on several leadership roles. His departure shows that the company’s latest restructuring has impacted senior executives as well.
