It has been over five years since Sony launched the PS5. The console recorded a sale of 80.3 million units worldwide until June this year and the number keeps growing each day. According to a new wave of leaks from credible hardware insiders, Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 6 could cost around $600, while Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox – codenamed Magnus – might reach as high as $1,200. The leak, which traces back to known tipster KeplerL2 and documents tied to AMD’s internal hardware roadmap, offers one of the most detailed looks yet at what to expect from the consoles set to launch around 2028.

Price gap explained: less silicon, smarter efficiency

KeplerL2 claims the PS6 will be significantly cheaper to manufacture than Xbox Magnus, primarily due to differences in internal architecture. “Next-gen Xbox has 42 percent more silicon, 20 percent more memory, and higher board and cooling costs,” the insider wrote on X (formerly Twitter). The post also points out that Microsoft cannot subsidise hardware through third-party store revenue, unlike Sony, which retains a stronger ecosystem advantage with exclusive titles and hardware tie-ins.

Based on the leaked figures, the PS6 console could feature around 30GB of unified memory, while the Xbox Magnus may ship with up to 36GB of RAM. Sony’s upcoming handheld variant, reportedly part of the same hardware family, is expected to include 24GB.

Sony PS6 chipset and other leaks

Sony and AMD are reportedly co-developing the PS6’s chip under the codename Project Amethyst. The chipset is said to build on AMD’s upcoming Zen 6 CPU and RDNA 5 GPU architectures, integrating new neural processing capabilities. This could allow the console to use AI-driven upscaling and real-time lighting improvements, bringing next-level performance without drastically increasing costs.

When will PS6 launch?

Sony hasn’t confirmed a release window for the PS6. However, multiple sources including Moore’s Law Is Dead suggest production could begin in 2027, followed by a launch in late 2027 or 2028. The leaks also hint that Sony plans to continue its dual-device approach, with a companion handheld system designed to work seamlessly with the main console.
