A “portrait shutter Icon” was reportedly found hidden within the Instagram Android app hinting at a portrait camera feature that might be under testing.
It was reported just yesterday that Instagram could be looking to introduce voice and video calling on the platform, and now, a new report from TechCrunch suggests that the social photo and video blogging platform could be testing a new portrait mode feature for its camera. A “portrait shutter Icon” was found hidden within the Instagram Android app. The said icon would appear while toggling various camera modes on the Instagram Stories interface.
It would be hardly surprising if Instagram looks to ape a portrait mode on its camera given that the Facebook-owned platform has borrowed various elements and features from others companies and brands in the tech space. The Instagram Stories feature was itself borrowed from Snapchat, but surpassed its popularity a long time ago. After that, Instagram introduced a bunch of camera-based innovations such as AR, stickers, GIFs, masks and more. Portrait mode is also a popular feature smartphone makers are increasingly adopting. The trend was started by Apple’s iPhones, but soon picked up by the likes of Samsung, OnePlus, Google Pixel, Huawei and many more. Given the popularity of the portrait mode, Instagram could very well bring it to its own platform through some software optimisations.
Instagram did not comment on the discovery of the portrait mode and declined a comment to TechCrunch. It is possible Instagram is testing the feature not only on Android but also on iOS, but there is no guarantee if it will make it to the platform eventually.
