Joining a new group chat can sometimes feel awkward. Conversations may already be in full swing, and important updates may have already been discussed. To make this experience easier, WhatsApp has introduced a new feature called Group Message History, which allows new members to quickly understand what they have missed.

✅ Thank you for completing the survey!
The idea behind this feature is simple: instead of asking others to explain everything again or relying on forwarded messages and screenshots, new participants can now view selected recent messages directly within the group. This helps them feel included from the start and keeps conversations flowing naturally without interruptions.
When someone is added to a group, admins and existing members will see an option to share recent messages with the new participant. They can choose a limited portion of the conversation- between 25 and 100 messages- so that only the most relevant context is provided instead of the entire chat history.
‘For transparency, when message history is sent, everyone in the group is notified, with clear timestamps and sender information, and message history is visually distinct from regular messages,’ the company explained.
It’s important to note that group admins can disable the feature if they do not want members to use it. However, admins will always have the ability to share history when needed.
The feature is currently being rolled out gradually, and is end-to-end encrypted like all other personal messages.
