Mobile number portability: How to port mobile phone number and check MNP status

Is your mobile phone number troubling you? Or your tariff package cost is very high? Or you are getting better plans and network coverage from another telecom operator. Mobile phone number portability is a facility provided by most telecom carriers in India. The facility allows users to switch their telecom operators without changing their existing phone numbers. The process to port a mobile number from one telecom service provider is mentioned below.

What is the eligibility criterion for MNP?

1. For a postpaid mobile connection, the subscriber must clear all ‘Outstanding dues’ towards the existing telecom service provider.
2. There should be no pending bills as per the normal billing cycle.
3. Next, the activation in the present operator’s network should not be less than 90 days.
4. Any request for a change of ownership of a mobile number should not be in process.
5. There should be no incomplete contractual obligations that need to be fulfilled by the customer as per the exit clause in the subscriber agreement.
6. The porting of the mobile phone number should not be prohibited by the court of law.
7. The mobile number desired to be ported should not be sub-judice.
8. In case any of the above conditions are not met, the request for MNP can be rejected and the rejection reason will be provided via SMS to the subscriber.

 

How to port mobile number

If you have decided to port your phone number from one operator to another follow the below mentioned steps on how to port number online.

1. First, send an SMS in the following format- PORT followed by space <Mobile number you wish to port> to 1900. The message would look something like- PORT <9899999999> to 1900. Make sure to send the MNP SMS from the same mobile number that you wish to port from.
2. Next, you will receive a Unique Porting Code (8 digit) from your current telecom operator on your mobile number. The UPC will be valid for 4 days across India except for Assam, Jammu & Kashmir and North East where the code is valid for up to 30 days. 3. It is important to submit the UPC at the earliest to your new operator.
4. Next, connect with your nearest service operator or visit the telecom operator’s office/store.
5. Then submit the 8-digit UPC number along with the documents required for the mobile number portability.
6. The subscriber will be charged a small sum of Rs. 5.74 by the new operator.
7. Next, the new telecom operator who you port your mobile number to will send a request to your old service provider for background verification of any current or outstanding mobile bill payments.
8. Once the verification process is completed, your new telecom operator will notify you of the time and date for the mobile SIM port process via SMS.
9. During the transition process of porting your mobile number, your mobile phone services will remain suspended for approx. 2 hours.
10. You can now insert the new SIM card to activate your mobile number with the new network service provider. 

How to port phone number online

If you want to port your phone number online follow the below mentioned steps.

1. First, download the app of the telecom provider you want to port your mobile number to.
2. Next, Open the app and go to the port section of the app.
3. Then you will see the option of keeping the existing number and changing the telecom provider.
4. Select the type of SIM you need whether prepaid or postpaid.
5. Next, choose the plan that you think is the best for you and confirm your location for doorstep delivery of your SIM card. 

How to track MNP status online

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) states that the maximum time for porting a mobile number should not be more than 4 days. If you have applied to port your mobile number and want to check your MNP status online follow the below mentioned steps.

1. To check MNP status, go to the MY Port Status (Zone – 1) or Know Your Porting Status (Zone – 2).
2. Next, enter your mobile number.
3. Then enter the UPC code.
4. Next, click on I am not a robot for verification.
5. Then, tap on the MNP Status button to check your MNP status online. 

How to cancel an MNP request

In case you change your mind, you can also cancel your MNP request by following the below mentioned steps.

1. A subscriber can withdraw their porting request within 24 hours of submitting a porting request.
2. Next, send SMS to 1900.
3. In case you want to cancel the port request, SMS ‘CANCEL’ followed by a space and your 10-digit mobile number, whose porting request you want to cancel.
4. Post withdrawal of porting request the customer shall not be entitled to any refund of the porting charges paid if any.
