CES 2024: AMD Launches Ryzen 8000G with Ryzen AI and Integrated Graphics, and additional 5000 Series Processors
HIGHLIGHTS

AMD announced the Ryzen 8000G Series desktop processors featuring powerful built-in graphics for both gaming and content creation.

AMD introduced Ryzen AI neural processing unit (NPU) into desktop PC processors for the first time.

AMD expanded its Ryzen 5000 Series with new processors such as the Ryzen 7 5700X3D with 3D V-Cache technology.

AMD is having a field day at CES 2024 with multiple announcements around the expansion of its desktop portfolio as well as a new graphics card. The biggest announcement was the new AMD Ryzen 8000G Series desktop processors. The ‘G’ suffix indicates an integrated GPU and AMD’s iGPUs are usually quite powerful. At the top of the new stack of processors announced today is the AMD Ryzen 7 8700G which AMD claims sports the most powerful built-in graphics available. However, the biggest announcement is the addition of an NPU (Neural Processing Unit) on the desktop processors announced today. Also announced were additional processors in the AMD Ryzen 5000 desktop series with one SKU having a 3D V-Cache.

In a significant technological advancement, AMD is incorporating a dedicated AI neural processing unit (NPU) into desktop PC processors for the first time. This development, branded as Ryzen AI, is set to enhance AI capabilities for consumers, boosting productivity, efficiency, and advanced collaboration. Ryzen AI was announced a while ago with the Ryzen 7040 series of mobile SoCs but with all AI accelerators on the client side, there aren’t that many software which can leverage the AI component. The use cases are yet to come.

“AMD continues to lead the AI hardware revolution by offering the broadest portfolio of processors with dedicated AI engines in the x86 market,” said Jack Huynh, senior vice president and general manager, Computing and Graphics Group at AMD. “Last year at CES, we introduced the first dedicated AI engine in an x86 processor for the mobile market. This year, we are expanding our AI leadership to desktop computing through our Ryzen 8000G Series processors. We’re excited to lead the AI PC era together with our close OEM and ecosystem partners.”

AMD Ryzen 8000G Series for Desktop

The AMD Ryzen 8000G Series is positioned as an all-in-one desktop processor solution. That means, these processors include an iGPU or integrated GPU. These processors feature up to eight cores and 16 threads, promising significant power and performance for demanding tasks. The series is built on the AMD Zen 4 microarchitecture which is also what powers the Ryzen 7000 series of desktop processors.

The Ryzen 7 8700G, a standout in this series, boasts eight cores, 16 threads, 24 MB of Cache, and Radeon 780M graphics. We’ve seen the 780M on the Ryzen 7040 mobile processors. Then there’s the Ryzen 5 8600G offers six cores, 12 threads, 22 MB of Cache, and Radeon 760M graphics. Then there is an AMD Ryzen 5 8500G and 8300G. The former will be available for retail purchase but the latter will primarily be found on OEM machines. Also, these two processors feature Zen4c cores. Zen4c is basically a compacted version of Zen4 with a reduced cache. Each Zen4c CCD has space for more cores in place of the reduced cache. Also, they both feature AMD Radeon 740M graphics. Of the four 8000G processors announced today, the 8700G and 8600G include the AMD Ryzen AI NPU. This technology enhances AI software capabilities, optimising AI workloads and introducing new features like AI-powered noise cancellation, as long as you have access to those AI features via the OS.

Like previous processors, these new AMD Ryzen 8000G processors do support AMD EXPO-certified memory modules and Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) for easy overclocking. The Ryzen 8000G Series will be available to DIY customers from January 31st, 2024, with OEM systems expected in Q2 2024.

New AMD Ryzen 5000 Series Processors

The AMD Ryzen 5000 Series processors, based on the Zen 3 microarchitecture, are now extended with four new processors. These include the AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D, which leverages AMD 3D V-Cache technology, offering an impressive 100 MB of on-chip memory. There are also the Ryzen 7 5700, Ryzen 5 5600GT and Ryzen 5 5500GT. The processors with the GT suffix do include an iGPU although we don’t know its specifications. This series is expected to be available from January 31st, 2024.
