AirPods Max vs AirPods Max 2: Here are all the major differences you should know before buying

AirPods Max 2 was just launched without much fanfare. On the surface, it looks unchanged, but there are deeper upgrades, including a new chip and smarter audio processing. This is not a typical spec bump. The difference comes from how the headphones process sound, react to your surroundings, and integrate with Apple’s ecosystem. So, if you are planning to buy Apple’s over-ear headphones and are deciding between the two, yes, pricing plays a role too. The older AirPods Max is now selling for around Rs 59,900, while the new AirPods Max 2 starts at Rs 67,900. Let’s now see what more you get for the Max 2’s launch price.

Here is a detailed breakdown of what actually changes, and what that means in daily use.

Same design, new colours

Apple has kept the design exactly the same. You still get aluminium ear cups, a stainless steel frame, and the mesh canopy headband. The weight remains around 386g, which is significantly heavier than rivals such as Sony WH-1000XM6 (252g) and JBL Tour One M3 (278g).

This means Apple believes the original design still delivers on build quality and comfort for its target user. The AirPods Max design is premium and easy to use. Like most headphones of its ilk, there is no water resistance on it. What’s more, its case also stays the same, which means it is meant to carry around the headphones, and protection isn’t the priority.

The only visible difference is colour. The new model gets refreshed options like purple and orange, which a buyer can choose based on their style and lifestyle choice.

H2 vs H1 changes

The biggest difference is the move from the H1 chip to the H2 chip.

On the older AirPods Max, the H1 chip handles noise cancellation, spatial audio, and basic computational audio tasks. It was strong in 2020, and Apple continued using it for the 2024 refresh, but it was due for an update.

Well, the H2 chip can process more environmental data in real time and enables features that require constant adjustment. It brings features previously exclusive to AirPods Pro to the Max lineup, like Adaptive Audio that automatically switches between ANC and Transparency as needed, Conversation Awareness, Personalised Volume, Voice Isolation, Loud Sound Reduction, Siri head gesture controls, and Personalised Spatial Audio.

Let’s read about these improvements in depth in the following sections.

Improved ANC and Transparency and Adaptive Audio

Apple claims up to 1.5x better ANC on the new model thanks to new algorithms and faster H2 processing. This should help better dampen noises like aeroplane engines or commuter trains.

Transparency mode also improves. It is said to sound more natural. We are eager to test this as the predecessor has already been industry-standard in this. This matters if you use it often while walking or working.

Furthermore, you also get Adaptive Audio, which blends ANC and transparency automatically. If you are in a quiet area, it lets in more ambient sound. If a loud noise appears, it increases cancellation instantly.

Other smart and convenient features

AirPods Max 2 adds a range of features powered by H2 and Apple Intelligence.

These include:

  • Conversation Awareness detects when you start speaking. It lowers your music and enhances nearby voices.
  • Live Translation for real-time language conversion
  • Voice Isolation for clearer calls
  • Personalised Volume that learns your habits
  • Loud Sound Reduction for hearing protection
  • Siri gesture controls using head movement
  • Camera remote using the Digital Crown
  • Studio-quality audio recording

The older model lacks all of these.

For someone deep into Apple’s ecosystem, this changes how often and how comfortably you use the headphones.

Better sound output

Both models use the same 40mm dynamic drivers. So the base sound signature should remain similar.

But since the newcomer has a new high dynamic range amplifier and the H2 processing, you can expect cleaner sound at higher volumes, more controlled bass, and improved separation between instruments.

The new AirPods also support 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio via USB-C. The older model didn’t support wired uncompressed audio like this. This should lead to a sound quality closer to the creator’s intent, with lower latency. Gamers, musicians, etc should find it useful.

The company also says spatial audio will be more accurate with this model. The company highlights Personalised Spatial Audio with head tracking. This works when connected via USB-C to Logic Pro or other music apps.

Same battery life and USB-C charging

There is no update in terms of battery life. So, you can expect it to be 20 hours like the predecessor. The H2 processing may bring in some efficiency. But still, largely, the runtime could be below competitors, many of which offer 30 hours or more. We will have to test this to be sure.

The USB-C port on the AirPods Max 2 can be used for charging. Since it allows wired listening, you can also use a single cable across devices for different purposes.

Closing thoughts

Besides the upgrades the AirPods Max 2 brings, largely thanks to the H2 chip, you also get ecosystem integration benefits like seamless switching between Apple devices, Spatial audio with head tracking, etc.

This was already strong on the older model, but with H2, this could be better.

If you are deciding today, the price gap is around Rs 8,000.

The older AirPods Max still offer:

  • Premium build
  • Strong ANC
  • Good sound quality

It makes sense if you want to save money and only need a high-quality listening device.

AirPods Max 2 makes sense if:

  • You want the best noise cancellation Apple offers
  • You care about smart, adaptive features
  • You plan to use it for calls, travel, or mixed environments
  • You want lossless wired audio
  • You want a more future-proof device
