Apple announced a slew of new software upgrades and features at its WWDC 2018 event. While announcing the new macOS Mojave, the company revealed that the HTC Vive Pro will get full support on the new OS, which was first spotted by Road to VR. At the event, Karol Gasinski of Apple's GPU Software Architecture Team said that the VR headset is getting “plug and play support” on MacOS 10.14 Mojave. Gasinski says, “We’ve been working very closely with both Valve and HTC to make sure Vive Pro is supported in SteamVR runtime on MacOS.” MacOS Mojave is slated to launch soon in public beta and roll out widely later this year.

The HTC Vive Pro features a pair of 1440 x 1600 AMOLED displays with a 615 PPI pixel density. Compared to its predecessor, HTC Vive, the Vive Pro gets a 78 percent resolution increase and a 37 percent increase in pixel density. It also supports Mixed Reality with the two stereo cameras that are embedded on the front. The device also supports SteamVR Tracking System 2.0, which uses additional sensors to increase the available space headset can track within.

Complete support for newer VR headsets comes after Apple partnered with developers like Valve, Unity and Epic for bringing VR content for its Mac users with macOS High Sierra. Then the company also enabled the use of external GPUs in High Sierra and above to enhance graphics capabilities of a Mac. Additionally, Valve launched SteamVR for macOS last year and extended the framework from PC, to work with compatible Macs. This simplified the development of games so that they work across both platforms.

Apple has released a preview of macOS 10.14 Mojave for members of the Developer Program. As per the report, the announced HTC Vive Pro support isn't included in this initial preview but it’s expected to be included in a future developer beta build, ahead of the official rollout of the OS this fall.
