Samsung buys entire first batch of Snapdragon 845 chipset for Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus: Report
HIGHLIGHTS

The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus are expected to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 platform. Reports suggest that Samsung has purchased almost the entire first batch of 845 SoC’s produced by Qualcomm. This isn’t the first time Samsung has done something like this

If information circulating the internet is to be believed, then Samsung will launch the Galaxy S9 family of smartphones “earlier” than expected. The smartphones will be powered by the Snapdragon 845 platform, Qualcomm’s next gen 10nm SoC. Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin said in a tweet that the Snapdragon 845 launching next year will be a Galaxy S9/S9+ exclusive. This may be the case for a short period of time. It is believed that Samsung has purchased almost the entire first batch of Snapdragon 845 chipsets produced by Qualcomm putting its competitors is a tough position. It is expected that Samsung will launch an Exynoss variant of the smartphones as well, but there is no information on the details of the Exynoss chip that will power the S9 and S9 Plus.

This isn’t the first time Samsung has done this. In 2016, when the company launched the Galaxy S8 and S8+, the smartphones were powered by the Snapdragon 835 platform. Samsung took nearly the entire stock of the 835-platform causing other manufacturers to delay their smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 835. LG went ahead and launched the LG G6 powered by the Snapdragon 821 platform to ensure timely release. Other smartphone makers like Sony, OnePlus and more launched their smartphones later in the year powered by the Snapdragon 835.

The information of Samsung taking the entire first stock of the 845 platform should be taken with a grain of salt. Earlier reports suggested that Xiaomi’s Mi 7 will be the first phone to launch powered by the 845 platform.

It is expected that the Snapdragon 845 will get manufactured through the 10nm Low Power Early (LPE) FinFET process. The 845 is expected to have a combination of Cortex A75 cores, Adreno 630 graphics and X20 LTE modem.

When it comes to other specifications of the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus, the smartphones are expected to have the same form factor and design as the S8 and S8 Plus. We would however appreciate it if Samsung repositions the fingerprint sensor as its placement is one of the biggest design flaws of the S8 and S8 Plus smartphone.

Samsung usually announces its flagship smartphones at its own event and not at MWC which takes place in Barcelona. If the S9 family of phones are expected to launch earlier than the S8 family of devices, then the announcement should happen pre MWC.
