Timex introduces smartwatch with 3G and GPS connectivity

Timex partners with AT&T and Qualcomm to launch Ironman One GPS+ smartwatch.

Timex has announced new IronMan One GPS+ smartwatch with built in communication tools and 3G connectivity. Timex cellular-connected GPS One+ has been priced at $399 and will go on sale this fall.

Timex has partnered with Qualcomm for the always-on Mirasol display on the smartwatch similar to the Qualcomm Toq, and an icon-based homescreen. The watch comes with a built in 3G radio, and can handle basic messaging right from your wrist. The smartwatch comes with a year of free data from AT&T.

The Ironman One GPS+ is similar to the companies Ironman range, which is meant mostly for athletes. It can track speed and distance, and can upload your workout data online. It has 4GB of inbuilt storage and supports Bluetooth radio connectivity. The smartwatch comes with GPS support, it can activate a "Find Me" mode with one tap if you get lost. Timex says that it'll get eight hours of battery with GPS enabled, and three days of more regular use. The smartphone is available in two colors, black and green. It comes with physical buttons on each of the four corners and six prominent icons on the main home screen.

Timex Chairwoman Annette Olsen stated that the wearable is coming from a watch company is a "very big deal. We think we know everything about the wrist. We know how the watch needs to fit. We know a lot about the design. … We think that with our knowledge about watches and technology this is a huge opportunity for us."

Wristwatch maker Swatch is also planning to tap into the wearable device market. The comapny is going to equip its Swatch Touch line smartwatches with electronic functions to measure personal fitness. The wearable is expected to be launched by 2015.
