Elon Musk’s satellite internet company, Starlink, is said to be on the verge of receiving final regulatory approval to launch its services in India, with space regulator IN-SPACe issuing a draft authorisation document for the company to sign. Once Starlink signs it, IN-SPACe will give the final green signal by countersigning the document.

This final approval will put Starlink on the same level as other satellite internet providers like Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite, which have already received similar authorisations. Last month, Starlink secured its Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) licence, making it the third company in India allowed to offer satellite-based internet services, according to reports.

However, getting this licence isn’t enough to begin operations. Starlink still needs to meet several security and technical requirements. Without security clearance, companies aren’t allowed to commercially launch their services, even if they have all other licences in place.

Starlink must set up essential ground infrastructure in India to move forward. This includes satellite earth stations, communication gateways and monitoring centres. Once these are ready, the company will need to demonstrate that its systems are working properly in order to receive final security clearance.

According to reports, Starlink is expected to begin its operations in India in the next two months. However, the company has not yet revealed the exact launch date or details about pre-orders.
