Mobile operators in India are gearing up to provide nationwide mobile number portability (MNP) from today. Telecom companies like Idea, Vodafone, Airtel and Reliance communications, along with state-run BSNL and MTNL will allow customers to port their mobile numbers even if they move between states. The deadline for this was originally set for May 3, but was extended to July 3 instead. Apart from the operators mentioned above, Uninor, Videocon and Sistema Shyam Teleservices have also said they will offer the service from today.

According to reports, Idea Cellular says it has already enabled the national MNP services on its network as mandated by the Department of Telecom. The company has reportedly been had a net gain of 14 million customers through intra circle MNP, making it the leader right now. In addition, competitor Reliance Communications, which will also be rolling out the services, has said that it will provide various offers and special plans in order to retain its customers.

Earlier, intra-circle MNP services were rolled out first in 2011 and it benefited telecom operators like Idea, Vodafone etc. But, operators also stand to lose customers because of this  service, especially not that numbers can be ported across states. According to numbers reported in April this year, India has a user base of 97.33 crore (973.3 million).
