Xiaomi Redmi 4 launch: Variants, features and other things you need to know

Xiaomi Redmi 4 comes in two variants differing in terms of display, processor and memory

Xiaomi Redmi 4, the latest budget smartphone from Chinese smartphone maker is now official. Xiaomi announced Redmi 4, Redmi 4A in China on Friday.

Here is three important things to know about the device:

1. Variants: Xiaomi Redmi 4 comes in two variants – Standard variant and a Pro version. The company also introduced another low-cost variant called Redmi 4A.

2. Design: The phone features a design similar to the existing Redmi series with unibody aluminium casing and a fingerprint scanner placed below the rear camera. Xiaomi has also tweaked the antenna design a bit,  as it seems to be less intrusive now. The volume rocker and power button are placed at the right hand side.

3. Specifications: Both the Xiaomi Redmi 4 variants feature a 5-inch display. The Standard version gets a 720p HD panel, while the Pro variant offers a full HD display. The Standard variant is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 430 processor, while the Pro version gets Snapdragon 625 chipset. The two variants also differ in terms of memory.  The Standard version gets 2GB RAM/16GB storage, while the Pro version offers 3GB RAM and 32GB memory.

Both the variants of Xiaomi Redmi 4 feature a 13MP main camera with f/2.2 aperture and 5 element lens. The smartphones also support phase detection autofocus with HDR mode and facial recognition. Xiaomi Redmi 4 sports a 5MP front camera with beauty mode and support for countdown selfie.

Xiaomi Redmi 4A, features a 5-inch HD display and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 425 processor. There is 2GB RAM and 16GB of on board storage, which can be expanded. Xiaomi Redmi 4A also features a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera. The rear camera, however, lacks phase detection autofocus.

All the three Redmi 4 variants support 802.11bgn WiFi standard, Bluetooth 4.1 and dual SIM card slot.

4. Price: Xiaomi Redmi 4A is the cheapest of the three smartphones priced at 499 Yuan (approximately Rs 4,990). Xiaomi Redmi 4 Standard version with Snapdragon 430 chipset is priced at 699 Yuan (approximately Rs 6,990), while the Pro version will retail for 899 Yuan (approximately Rs 8,990).
